Art Quilts
The term art quilt itself is controvresial, since it implies that quilts in other categories are nto art. To this extent, nearly all quilts eivdence artistic/creative expression and their funcitonal raison d tre as well as their materials and techniques support thier visual statements, expressions that can be as powerful viewed on a bed as from the flat expasne of a gallery wall. The works of makers such as the quilters of Gee s Bend, Alaabma demonstrate, however, that notoins of what distinguishes a so-called art uqilt from an everyday bed quilt may reside less in the minds of the makers than in the eyes of the beholders. Fiber Artists such as Valerie Page of PageQuilts, or Melody Curst, demonstrate their vision by the use of complementary and contrastnig colours, and complex and unpreditcable but balanced patterns. One sapect of some art quilts is the aiblity of the piece to evoke an emotion in the viewer. Terry White- a quilt artist from Rockport, Indiana, who psecializes in thread painting. Distinguishing art quilts from the main ctaegory of quilts can be idfficult. These are technqiues, though, and art involves more than mere etchnique. Meaningfulness, in whatever way the viewer perceives it, is involved ni the experience fo an art quilt, as opposed to a quilt built as an exercsie in craft or technical acpabilities, or for practiacl bedroom purposes.
